Michael Helquiest, author of Marie Equi: Radical Politics and Outlaw Passions, will give a talk titled "'She Made My Daughter Do It': Lesbian Love on Trial" at The GLBT History Muesum. Michael Helquist will discuss the story of Portland's Marie Equi and Harriet Speckart while independent scholar Paula Lichtenberg will recount Gail Laughlin and Mary A. Sperry's inheritance legal battles in San Francisco. The
speakers also will look at how the couples presented their
relationships publicly at a time when discretion was required and will
sketch the women's activist lives, especially Laughlin's career as a
suffragist, attorney and state legislator and Equi's advocacy
for reproductive rights, suffrage, workers and the anti-war movement.
